WEBINAR

GROW COMMUNITY CONFIDENCE THROUGH LOCAL MEDIA

"Let the community and future parents know the great things going on at your school."

Dear School Leader

Are you sick of all the negative news stories about schools and education when you have so many good things going on and high achieving students in different areas?

Despite some views to the contrary, media are interested in these things. The only difference is that it's local media rather than metropolitan and national media outlets. I can tell you this from experience.

The key is knowing what local media want and how to give it to them. By doing this you create community confidence in the education you provide and it's a wonderful way to balance up all the negative news we see.

This webinar has been a long time coming after two principals asked me to put it on. They were frustrated that the media only focused on the negative and all the great things their students were doing never saw the light of day. They say this meant their was a lack of community confidence in the school and some parents avoided sending their children there because the good news stories were never heard.

They realised that local media covered a lot more positive stories and this was a better target for them anyway because its circulation area was their community. But they had no idea where to start in approaching local media or if it was even possible.

In this Webinar, I show you the simple process of getting your school into local media for the right reasons (Also remember that this coverage is completely free). It's quite simple when you know and it can lead to ongoing positive publicity. Believe me as a former education reporter who struggled to ever get enough content to satisfy my editor.

This is all why I've decided to run this workshop. It's ideal for anyone at your school who may look after marketing, yourself as the leader, or preferably a few people together. It's not rocket science and doesn't have to take much time, but you do need to know the process.

ABOUT PETE
Pete Burdon is the founder and head trainer of Media Training NZ. He is a former education reporter and high-profile government press secretary.

This puts him in the unique position of having worked on both sides of the media interaction. That not only means he knows exactly what the media want in their positive stories, but also how to convince reporters and editors to publish content that can massively boost your school's reputation in the community.

Pete moved into media training because he saw a major disconnect between the news media and their potential story sources. He saw so many schools and businesses (but particularly schools) miss so many opportunities to generate media coverage that could do wonders for community confidence . He now shows them how to identify and leverage those opportunities.

He has Masters Degrees in Journalism and Communication Management, lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, and works across New Zealand.

WHAT OTHERS SAY...
"Pete is an expert at getting good publicity. When he was my press secretary in government, I remember weeks when I got more media coverage than the Prime Minister and Pete was a major factor in making that possible."

MAURICE WILLIAMSON, FORMER CABINET MINISTER, NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT
"This is a very valuable course and builds on what you might pick up through osmosis. I got some really good strategies about how to get good stories about the school into the news. A few days later, I emailed a journalist with a story idea for him and within half an hour, he replied  wanting a picture to go with the story that appeared in the following day's newspaper."

ANNA HEFFERNAN, FORMER PRINCIPAL, MARIAN COLLEGE, CHRISTCHURCH (THIS WAS A HALF-DAY COURSE)
"I did a workshop with Media Training NZ focused on how to attract positive media coverage for my business. It was totally practical, really cut to the chase and gave me the confidence to approach the media and what to say to who. It was only a few weeks ago, but since then I've been featured on National Radio and had two appearances on National TV, once on the 6pm News and the other on a major network Breakfast Show . That's generated massive interest in the business. I can't think of a better way to grow our profile or reputation and it's absolutely free."
