prepared, not panicked
A Practical Crisis Communication Planning Workshop for Schools

Dear School Leader

Are you and your school  or all schools in your Kāhui Ako ready for that crisis or negative event that leads to media and public scrutiny at a moment's notice. For example, serious parent complaints making the news, bullying allegations, injury or death to students or problems on the school camp. I could go on and you will be aware of some recent examples.

This Seminar will show you how to be prepared for such situations and how to handle them.

Who is it for?

While lots of our events have been attended by principals (particularly media interview training workshops), this one is equally focused on Board Chairs, DPs and APs. That's because they are often better placed to lead the communication response to issues or crises as the principal will be focused on multiple areas.

The principal may be the spokesperson, (or the Board Chair) but there are many other things that need to be prepared and taken care of on crisis day and these are better handled by a DP or AP. That's why it's ideal for all school leaders, not just principals.

What you'll Learn

  • Common misperceptions about the media
  • Traps to avoid when sending statements to media and your community
  • How to master media interviews  (This is not a media interview training workshop where everyone is on camera multiple times, but it does explain the media interview process).
  • The 5 key things you need in your crisis communication plan (That are simple to prepare).
  • How a media crisis is likely to unfold and how to deal with it.
This is all done through the use of real life scenarios that you are more than likely to face, if you haven't already.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THIS seminar...
“I just wanted to thank you for your presentation as I felt it was incredibly empowering for both myself and my Presiding Member (Board chairperson). The practical nature of your presentation was very helpful and all three of those who attended from our school, commented that it was some of the most helpful PD we have been to in a long time.

Funnily enough, we had the ODT on the line during your presentation and it helped us immensely putting together our response and I am sure we will use this training in the days to come as we have a property / enrolment issue that will be ongoing for some time that I'm sure the media are going to keep chasing."

ROBYN WOOD, PRINCIPAL, GEORGE STREET SCHOOL
"I attended Pete Burdon’s seminar in Manakau and found it hugely beneficial and very practical. I now feel a lot more confident in dealing with the media if some negative event about the school attracts their attention. It's one of the best seminars I’ve been to."
